How I think about the therapy process:

You are the expert on yourself.  Therapy is a means of improving that expertise, primarily through our relationship together.  My task is to provide an environment that encourages you to improve that expertise, through specific therapeutic tools, encouraging and modeling openness in our relationship, and giving space to allow old experiences to surface and be explored so that they can be packed away more cleanly.  I wish for my clients to have the ability to chose their paths where they can, rather than feel as if they’re being pushed along by the whims of fate.  While there are specific tools based on evidence-based models I utilize, I believe that these tools should always be tailored to my clients, rather than prescriptions I write for your life.

Who I work best with:

I primarily work with adults who have experienced negative impacts of trauma in their childhoods or over the course of their adult lives.  Many have been directly or indirectly effected by substance abuse.  They may also have had mixed results with therapy in the past, and are sometimes seeking a new approach to finding help.  Please note that, despite my license as a marriage and family therapist, I only provide therapy for individuals at this time.

Specialty Training:

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Washington.  I obtained a master’s degree in Couples and Family Therapy from the University of Oregon in 2014.  I completed training to provide eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in 2016.  I primarily provide therapy using relational approaches, mindfulness, and EMDR.  I also utilize aspects of cognitive behavior therapy and dialectical behavior therapy.  I have worked in inpatient drug and alcohol treatment in the past, and work with many clients in recovery.

Who I am outside work:

I spend time with my wife, dog, and cats.  I love being outdoors and working with my hands.  My interests are widespread: I spent time as a computer science major, then eventually got my degree in music.  I have worked in TV, radio, and theatres as a technician, as well as in banking and libraries.  I love learning in general, so it might be easier to ask “what project am I working on this month?”
